167 After Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) devastated parts of the Philippines, the Tzu Chi Foundation formed the "Typhoon Haiyan Relief Co-ordination Center" on November 11th, 2013. Its volunteers went to the disaster areas on Nov. 13th and focused their efforts on Ormoc and Tacloban in Leyte province. They distributed relief goods and emergency funds, held free clinics and organized a cash for work program; they also built temporary classrooms. All these were aimed at helping the residents affected by the typhoon. On Jan. 21st, 2014, the ninth typhoon relief team finished its mission of distributing emergency funds. After that, the Typhoon Haiyan relief mission entered its mid- and long-term stage. During this phase, Tzu Chi continues to help build temporary classrooms and repair school buildings in Leyte; it is also helping to build pre-fabricated houses which accommodate residents before they are able to move into permanent homes. Tzu Chi's housing development team combines the experiences of building temporary classrooms with the suggestions of Master Cheng Yen and volunteers in the Philippines. They have frequently adjusted the design of the pre-fabricated houses, in the hope that the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan may have safe and comfortable housing.
